September 12, 2015

Bengaluru, Sep 12: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials on Friday arrested and released Ramachandrapura Mutt seer Raghaveshwara Bharathi in connection with the first rape case filed by a Ramakatha singer. A senior CID official said that a final report in the first case will be filed soon.

The victim's daughter had filed the complaint against Raghaveshwara Bharathi with Banashankari police, on Aug 28, 2014, after her parents were arrested on charge of blackmailing the seer. The State government had handed over the case to the CID in September 2014.

The seer visited the CID office along with his advocate at around 3.30 pm. He was questioned by a team of police officials led by Superintendent of Police, Sirigowri. The seer was formally arrested and released after executing the bail conditions.

Sources said that seer produced a personal bond of Rs one lakh and a surety bond of Rs 1 lakh. He also signed on the arrest register, Prisoner’s Search Register and Arrest Card. The CID officials also took the fingerprint of the seer as a procedure normally followed during the arrest.

“We have almost reached the finality in the case. Though the seer had obtained anticipatory bail, the arrest formality was not conducted. Besides, since the victim has alleged rape in several places across the country, the teams had to visit each and every place and conduct the mahazar. The seer was told to appear before the Investigating Officer on Friday and the arrest formality was completed. The final report will be submitted soon,” a senior police official said.

Premalata Diwakar, in her complaint, stated that she was raped by the seer continously since October 2011 during the Ramakatha programmes.

The seer moved the High Court, when the CID issued notice to the seer to appear for medical examination.

After the High Court dismissed the petition, the seer was subjected to medical examination in Dec 2014.

Recently, another complaint of rape was filed against the seer at Girinagar police station. The victim, an artiste, stated that she was raped by the seer once in 2006 when she was a minor and again in 2012 at mutt's Girinagar branch in Bengaluru. The government has transferred the second case to the CID recently.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.
