Mangaluru/Bengaluru, May 26: Setting the stage for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Karnataka, the coastal districts and other parts of the state received heavy rain last night. At least five persons were killed due to lighting strikes in last two days in different parts.

A powerful lighting strike claimed the life of a 36-year-old woman at Nellikaru village in Moodbidri of Dakshina Kannada last night when rains lashed different parts of the coastal district coupled with heavy thunderstorms.

The victim has been identified as Savitri Rathod, wife a Nalappa Rathod, who serves in the Forest Department. He also suffered injuries in the incident.

A 25-year-old woman was struck dead by lightning at Bisalwadi in Chamarajanagar on Thursday evening. The victim Seetamma was taking shelter under a tree when the lightning struck her. The dodarasanakere pond filled after three decades, owing to copious rain in the region.

Heavy rains also affected parts of Bengaluru leading to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre issuing moderate flood alerts in the city.

Meanwhile, the rains however brought relief from the sweltering heat in several other parts of the state including Mandya. While trees and electricity poles were uprooted in KR Pet and Srirangapatna in the district and vehicles were left stranded on roads, the rains also brought cheer to residents by bringing down the temperature.

Lightning strike kills 3 in Ballari district

Three persons were killed after being struck by lightning and private and public property were damaged due to gusty winds that have been blowing all over Ballari during the past 48 hours.

More rains expected

The weather office has issued a heavy rainfall warning for the next couple of days in parts of the State even as the government machinery began gearing up to face the monsoon.

According to Sunil Gavaskar, meteorologist at KSNDC, “This rainfall is due to the trough which is going over Karnataka, and there is also an upper air cyclonic circulation near Tamil Nadu coast, due to which we are getting additional rainfall.”

"Intermittent showers of moderate rainfall are expected in Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka during the weekend. The systems in place will remain the same," he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.
