Bengaluru, Apr 9: Heavy rain which lashed parts of Karnataka claimed a life and damaged horticulture crops on Wednesday.
A youth was killed when a lightning struck him at Uppalli in Chikkamagaluru district. The deceased has been identified as Pradeep (22). The incident occurred when he was talking over mobile phone. Heavy rain coupled with lightning and thunder lashed Chikkamagaluru. Trees were uprooted on IG Road and Basavanahalli Road disrupting the movement of vehicles.

Heavy rain coupled with gusty winds brought down more than 1,000 banana plants in Madalu village in Kanakatte hobli of Arasikere taluk, Hassan district.
The strong winds razed more than 600 fruit-yielding banana plants of farmer M Prakash Murthy while another farmer Mallikarjunappa lost more than 300 plants. The winds brought down at least 100 coconut trees and blew away tin sheets off the roof of a hotel.
Water gushed into low-lying areas washing away household articles and food grains. Electricity supply was affected as poles wee uprooted and wires snatched.
Huliyar taluk in Tumakuru district received good rain on Wednesday. Mercury level had gone up in the morning and towards noon it rained heavily across the taluk. The rain has set the stage for khariff cultivation.
