Mangalore, Feb 14: Voicing their objection to the suspension of Air India Express (AIE) direct flight services from Mangalore to Kuwait on Thursday, office bearers of Rachana Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mangalore presented a memorandum to the officials representing the airline in Mangalore, urging restoration of the direct flight services within a week.
Speaking on the occasion, Ivan D'Souza said that the flight services had been suspended by the state-owned airline since the Mangalore-Kuwait sector was not profitable. There are thousands of people from coastal Karnataka and Kasargod employed in Kuwait, for whom the suspension is a major disappointment. The government should not work merely for profit, but serve the interests of people, he said, urging the airline to resume the services within a week.
He said that they would hold protests in front of the Mangalore International Airport failing the resumption of the direct flight within the specified time.
“As a state-owned airline, we believe that AIE has a social obligation to serve the thousands of citizens that travel from this region to Kuwait. We will be constrained to take the matter further, to ensure that the people of region do not suffer as a result of the sudden withdrawal of the direct flights,” he said.
The organisation presented a memorandum to the station manager of Air India Express Nagesh S Shetty and urged the airline to resume the flight services.
The memorandum will also be sent to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajith Singh, as well as Union Ministers Oscar Fernandes and M Veerappa Moily through the organisation.
John Monteiro, Oswald D'Cunha, Alston D'Cunha, Lewis Lobo, Anil Lobo, Ashith Pereira and others were present.
