Mangaluru, Jan 3: Dakshina Kannada District Assistant Labour Commissioner D G Nagesh said that a total of 3,16,529 families below poverty line (BPL) had been identified in the district to cover workers in the unorganised sector under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) for the year 2014.

Mr Nagesh said that out of the total 48,133 families identified in rural areas in Mangaluru taluk, only 26,173 families (54.39 percent) had been enrolled for the scheme, whereas out of 45,774 families identified in rural areas in Bantwal taluk, only 27,513 families (60.10 percent) had been enrolled.
He informed that the enrollment process was yet to be completed in Puttur and Sullia taluks.
When the low enrollment rates were pointed out by DK deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim in the meeting, Mr Nagesh said that a few gram panchayats in the district had not shown any interest in the scheme, while Anganwadi workers and ASHA workers refused to be enrolled under the scheme.
He said that others were deterred by lack of awareness and necessary information on the scheme.
Mr Ibrahim directed the labour department officials to contact labour unions to ensure enrollment of more beneficiaries in the district.
Mr Nagesh said that the Karnataka State Private Commercial Vehicle Drivers' Accident Relief Scheme launched by the government had also not been utilised to its full extent, as not even one-third of beneficiaries were covered by the scheme.
