New Delhi, May 29: Former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein had attracted widespread criticism by building underground bunkers to rescue himself from unexpected bombardment from United States. But, now the new Indian prime minister Narendra Modi is going on to the extent of building a huge underground tunnel to travel from his official residence 7, Race Course Road (7, RCR) to Safdarjung Airport!

The tunnel runs through Kamal Ataturk Marg, Golf Course and Safdarjung Tomb and it will meet the ground at the helicopter hanger at Safdarjung airport. 7 RCR and Safdarjung airport is about 3 km apart.
The entire plan is being conceived and implemented by Mr Modi's security wing.
The Central Public Works Department had begun the construction of the tunnel in 2010. It is being supervised by the Intelligence Bureau. The CPWD reportedly hired the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the project.
Apart from providing an emergency and secured passage to Mr Modi, it is being propagated that the tunnel may also ensure that traffic on the road does not come to a halt by PM's movement.
Safdarjung airport serves as a conduit for flying VVIPs to Indira Gandhi International Airport when they travel out of Delhi.
As of now Mr Modi often takes a helicopter from this airport to reach places in and around Delhi as well as to go to the IGI airport to catch a flight.
