Sandalwood cinematographer Sundarnath Suvarna dies at 60

Bangalore, Dec 10: Renowned cinematographer of Kannada cinema Sundarnath Suvarna breathed his last on Tuesday morning in Bangalore.

According to family sources, Suvarna, 60, was suffering from cancer for some time. His last rites will be held in his native Mangalore on Wednesday.

Sundarnath Suvarna worked with his father in a textile factory in Mangalore in his initial days. He learnt art of photography from the camera belonging to the owner of the textile firm. Later he entered Kannada film industry as still photographer.

After associating with literary personalities including Jnanpith recipient writer Chandrashekara Kambara, he was exposed to the sphere of culture. He made his debut through Aparoopada Athithigalu. He became director and producer through Aarambha. He also directed Agniparva, Neenanna Daiva, Tiger Gangu, Kiladi Tata and produced Halliyadarenu Shiva.

His cinematography work in Rajakiya and Nammora Mandara Hoove brought him both name and fame. Sri Manjunatha, Mussanje Matu, Chellata, Amritavarshini, Gandugali Kumararama, Indradhanush, Tamassu, Operation Antha, Anuraga Sangama, Lock Up Death, Golibar are cited as examples of his cinematography skills by people in the film industry.

Recognizing his contribution to Kannada cinema industry, Karnataka government had honoured him recently with Karnataka Rajyotsava award.
