Bengaluru, May 30: As many as 216 doctors from the Karnataka Medical Registry have been issued show-cause notices by the Karnataka Medical Council (KMC) for having reneged on the assurance to serve in rural areas following the completion of their post-graduate courses.

The move comes in the backdrop of pressure from the state government as it has been finding it difficult to deploy doctors in rural hospitals.

All 1,159 doctors who had done their post-graduation through government quota had signed a bond with the government undertaking that they would render one-year-long compulsory rural service or pay a penalty of Rs 10 lakh in lieu of it. However, a majority of these doctors have neither served in rural areas for a year, nor did they pay the penalty.

Health minister Ramesh Kumar had warned such errant doctors and urged KMC to initiate action against them on the basis of violation of medical ethics which can be treated as professional misconduct and the license of these doctors can be cancelled.

KMC registrar Dr B P S Murthy sent notices to 216 doctors on Monday seeking explanation as to why actions should not be initiated against them for failing to serve in rural areas. The doctors have been given 15 days' time to reply.
