Bengaluru, Jun 17: The son of a sitting judge of the Kerala High Court has died in a collision between two bikes on Sudduguntepalya main road in Mico Layout here, the police said.

judge son
Anand Mathew, 20, son of Justice Babu Mathew P Joseph, was grievously injured, when the bike he was riding pillion on, collided head-on with another two-wheeler coming from the opposite direction around 10.45 pm on Monday. His classmate, named Prince, a native of Idukki, Kerala, was riding the bike.

As the bike reached the Sudduguntepalya main road, Prince overtook a vehicle from the right side and crashed his motorcycle into another two-wheeler. The crash was so powerful that Mathew was tossed up in the air. He then crashed down and suffered serious head injuries. Prince escaped with minor injuries, so did Balaji, the rider of the other bike, the police said.

Passersby rushed the three men to a nearby hospital where Prince and Balaji were treated as outpatients. Mathew, however, was moved to the St John’s Medical College Hospital where doctors could not revive him and he succumbed to the injuries around 2.45 am on Tuesday, the police added.

Mathew, a native of Kochi, was a student of fourth year law programme at Christ University and was staying at a hostel in SJ Palya near Taverekere here. His parents, who were informed about the tragedy, rushed to Bengaluru and took the body to their native place after the post-mortem.

A senior police officer said that it was nothing but rash driving and speeding that led to the accident. “Both the riders were wearing helmets which saved their lives. None of them was drunk.”

M A Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said he and Justice Joseph had visited the accident site. “We have called a few eyewitness for questioning to ascertain how exactly the accident took place. The two injured riders will be questioned too.”

Prayer meeting

Meanwhile, law students held a prayer meeting at Christ University on Tuesday. Mathew’s classmates said the accident was tragic.

“He came out as a responsible person. He was good at academics and was interested in street plays too. He had taken part in several street plays,” one of them said.

According to the classmates, after having dinner, Prince told Mathew he would drop him at his hostel. “We are told Prince was speeding and crashed his bike into another two-wheeler coming from the opposite direction. We have no idea how exactly the incident took place. We learnt about it late at night and rushed to the hospital. Then came the tragic news that Anand was no more,” the classmate added.

A case has been registered at the Mico Layout traffic police station and investigation is being carried out.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Udupi: The pontiffs of Sri Paryaya Puttige Mutt, the sacred seat of Jagadguru Shrimad Madhvacharya Moola Samsthanam, have submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister seeking comprehensive development for Udupi district.

Proposal for International Airport

A key request is the establishment of an international airport. Highlighting that around 1,000 acres of land are available and suitable, the pontiffs noted that the existing Mangalore Airport provides limited international connectivity. They suggested the airport be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or as a Greenfield Airport to boost trade, education, healthcare, and spiritual tourism.

Metro and Rapid Transit Connectivity

The proposal also calls for Metro Rail or Rapid Transit between Mangaluru and Udupi. The 55 km coastal stretch experiences heavy daily commuter traffic, causing congestion. The district administration is ready to prepare an initial project report for a Mass Rapid Transit corridor and requested inclusion under national urban mobility programmes to ensure safe, green, and time-efficient regional transport.

Port and Coastal Development

The pontiffs urged the development of an international-standard port with a cruise terminal along Udupi’s coast. They also requested fast-tracking of pending coastal tourism projects and revising Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms to encourage sustainable infrastructure and hospitality investment.

IT, AI and Technological Infrastructure

Support was sought for an IT and AI Innovation Park with incubation facilities under Digital India and Startup India initiatives. The proposal also emphasized the need for strengthened data security and cloud computing infrastructure to boost India’s technological independence.

Sports and Education Initiatives

The pontiffs requested national sports status for Kambala, along with financial and infrastructure support. They also sought the establishment of an AIIMS in Udupi, a new IIT campus, and approval for an IIM to promote higher education in the district.

Representation to the Prime Minister

Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Pontiff and Sri Sushrendra Tirtha Swamiji represented the pontiffs in submitting the comprehensive development proposal to the Prime Minister during his recent visit.
