
Beltangady Jaya Bhandary, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, breathed his last in the hospital within an hour after he was hit by a car.
The 66-year-old former cop, hailing from Nagori in Mangaluru, was about to cross the road near Mahesh Hospital along with his friend, when a speeding Wagon R knocked him down.
Mr Bhandary had been to Brahmavar to attend a function in connection to a relative's wedding. The car was plying towards Kundapur from Udupi when the tragedy took place.
A critically injured Bhandary was immediately rushed to Mahesh Hospital and then taken to KMC, Manipal, where he breathed his last.
The car driver Abdul Rahim surrendered to the police after the accident. A case has been registered in Brahmavar police station.
