Mangaluru, Sep 19: The agitation against the diversion of river in Dakshina Kannada district, continued with thousands of students from various colleges on Saturday staged a massive protest in Mangaluru demanding the state government to drop the project.
The agitators took out a march from Ambedkar Circle and converged in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner, where a protest meet was held.
The protest was organised by the All College Students Association of Mangalore University. The Association had also called for a college bandh on Saturday to press the government to stop the on-going Yettinahole project in Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district.
Similar protests were held in front of the Tahsildar’s offices at BC Road, Puttur, Sullia and Belthangady.
Addressing the protesters, Kemaru mutt pontiff Esha Vittaldasa Swami, said that students should continue to protest against the controversial project until the state government withdraws its decision.
He said that diverting a river is an attack on the nature. “We should not go against the nature. It is equivalent to rape. If we spoil the nature and create imbalance, the nature too will retaliate in the form of earth quakes, tsunamis and other calamities,” he warned.
Dinakar Shetty, legal advisor to the association, said that the MP and MLAs from Dakshina Kannada have failed to protect the interests of people of the district by allowing the project work to start now.
He alleged that the former Chief Ministers M. Veerappa Moily and D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who are now MPs, were mainly responsible for the project being implemented now.
He said that the project would neither supply water to the parched districts of the State nor would it help the people of Hassan and Dakshina Kannada districts. It would only destroy greenery, ecology and environment in a 65-km radius in Sakleshpur taluk and would kill the Nethravati.
Before joining the protest march, students of St.Aloysius College assembled at the open air auditorium of the college. “Our Principal and our lecturer spoke about the project and the ecological impact on Western Ghats from this water diversion. They inspired us to take part in the protest,” said Mohammed Hussain, president of the College Students Union.
Similar activity was carried at the Badaria College where students were briefed about the project. “We did this two years ago when a district bandh had been called against the project,” said N. Ismail, Principal, Badria PU College.
