Mangaluru, Mar 27: Governor of Karnataka Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala on Friday encouraged the translation of literary works in regional languages to Hindi so that majority of the Indian population which was Hindi-speaking, could understand the ideas and concepts in them.

Inaugurating the Joint Regional and Official Language Conference of South and South-West Regions, organised by the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs in the coastal city on Friday, he said that strengthening the national language Hindi would strengthen the country and improve its national unity. The country will be strengthened when its thoughts and ideas are strengthened, which can be achieved through knowledge. This knowledge can be gained from languages; hence the need for promoting the official language, he said.

He said that there should be no conflict of interests when it came to the official language. The Indian Constitution proclaims Hindi as the national language of the country. However, the encouragement of Hindi as official language does not imply condemning English or regional languages such as Kannada, he said, pointing that language was merely meant for understanding.

“Every state has its own language, and it should be promoted along with the national language. We should honour all regional languages while strengthening our national language, which can help in boosting our national unity,” he encouraged.

He said that people in the country learnt English language to understand the law which was written in English. If the laws and other publications are brought out in Hindi in the future, the language will gain more prominence and importance among all the citizens, he noted.

Stressing on the need to promote the official language Hindi in all central government and public sector offices, Secretary of Department of Official Language Snehlata Kumar announced that the cash award under Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar Yojana had been increased to encourage promotion of the national language.

Chairman and Managing Director of Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL) Malay Chatterjee, Chief General Manager of Corporation Bank, Mangaluru A P Malhotra, Joint secretary of Department of Official Language Poonam Juneja and several others were present in the programme.

Awards were distributed to various individuals for effective implementation of Hindi official language in central government offices, public sector offices and nationalised banks, along with awards for best Town Official Language Implementation Committees (TOLIC) in South and South-West regions.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
