Mangalore, Jan 9: Thousands of students took part in a mass protest rally from Ambedkar Circle to Nehru Maidan organised by Jagruta Mahila Vedike, Mangalore, against the recent case of kidnap, forced sex and blackmail of two medical students in Deralakatte.

Following the rally, a massive protest and awareness programme was conducted in Nehru Maidan where BJP leaders and ABVP members took part.

Addressing the gathering, state BJP Mahila Morcha vice president Sulochana G Bhat said that the Deralakatte forced sex case was no different than the Delhi Nirbhaya case that had occurred a year ago. We have to strongly condemn this and unitedly fight against this, she said.

In the homestay attack few months ago, the accused were booked under Goonda Act, but in this case of such magnitude, the police hesitated even to register a case against the rapists. It is a situation of double standards for different culprits. If the police had independently taken prompt action, then there was no need for any protest against it, she said.

She expressed her suspicion that the male victim in the case was also involved with the gang that kidnapped them. It is highly suspicious that the male victim was not subjected to a probe by the police, nor was his statement taken, she said, alleging the local politicians of trying to protect persons from the same community and indulging in vote-bank politics.

ABVP national secretary Mamata Yadav said that environment of fear created in the society due to increasing number of crimes against women had to be cleared. “Women know that problem will not be resolved in a single day. Awareness has to be created in the society, which is why we have gathered here today. A year after the Nirbhaya gang-rape incident in Delhi, the question of women's safety still lingers on,” she said.

Questioning the administration's silence on the issue of women's security, she said that the government was running away from its responsibility. “We demand that such crimes should not occur again, and the government should respond to our demand,” she said, encouraging girls to strengthen their minds and toughen their bodies in order to save themselves from being victims of crime.

Advocate Asha Prasad demanded a full stop to the rising crimes against women in the society.

Sadhvi Mata Anandamayi also addressed the gathering.

Honorary president of Jagruta Mahila Vedike Kamala Prabhakar Bhat read out a list of decisions taken in the programme such as booking the eight accused in Deralakatte case under Goonda Act and charges of gang-rape, along with 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. Another decision was transferring the case to a fast-track court and ensuring swift justice and appropriate protection for the victim in the case.

Other decisions include detailed probe on the web of criminals operating in the district, a special police task-force in every district, a fear-free environment in college campuses for safety of female students and a police out-post in college campuses with above 3,000 students.

Writer Dr S R Leela, BJP leaders Pushpalatha Gatty, Mallika Prasad and several others took part in the awareness programme.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
