Hubballi, Sept 10: A suspected thief recreated a scene from Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chennai Express by pushing a Travelling Ticket Inspector (TTI) out of a moving train on Sunday.
K M Chinnappa fractured his fingers and suffered head injuries in the incident. According to police, he was examining travellers’ tickets in three second-class sleeper compartments (S3 to S5) of the Goa Express (train number 12780) from Miraj to Hubballi.
Soon after the train departed from Raybag railway station around 4 am, Chinnappa noticed a man travelling on second-class general ticket stealing the mobile phone of a passenger who was fast asleep. He rushed there, caught the suspect and seized the phone.
With the aim of handing over the suspect to the police at the Ghataprabha railway station, the ticket examiner kept a close watch on him. A while later, the suspect said he wanted to relieve himself and went to the toilet. Chinnappa followed him. All of a sudden, the suspect sprinted to the door and tried to get out of the compartment.
When Chinnappa tried to pin him down, the suspect pushed him out of the moving train and ran away. Alarmed by what happened, passengers informed Chinnappa’s colleagues and the chain was pulled to stop the train. Chinnappa was taken to the government hospital in Ghataprabha and later brought to the Central Railway Hospital in Hubballi.
