According to police sources, seven people were illegally transporting eight cattle from Shanivarasanthe towards Mangaluru on board a Tempo Traveller. Acting on a tip off, a team of police posted at Kodlipete outpost signalled the drivers of the tempo and an escort pickup to stop. However both the drivers sped away instead of stopping for the police.

Immediately, the cops boarded their vehicle and began to chase the tempo and managed to intercept it near Gonigal. The police arrested two persons on board the tempo, while five others manged to flee. The arrested have been identified as Shareef and Mansoor from Mangaluru.

The seized tempo was later taken to Kodlapete and parked near the police outpost while the eight cattle were tied separately to a tree.

When the news began to spread, a large number of people gathered near the police outpost. A group of miscreants torched the vehicle in spite of the presence of policemen, who later took two of the arsonists into custody. They are Kumar and Dharmaraj.

The arsonists claimed that the cattle were stolen from a cowshed in Shanivarasanthe. Police are investigating the matter. Dakshina Kannada, Hassan and Kodagu police are searching for those who escaped during the operation.
