Udupi, Sep 7: Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, said on Wednesday that a new city bus stand for the low-floor government city buses would be constructed at the Old DDPI Office at a cost of Rs. 3 crore.

He was speaking after flagging off the first phase of low-floor government city buses provided under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) scheme at the Mahatma Gandhi Bayalu Ranga Mandira, here.
The government city buses will start operating here from Thursday putting an end the long monopoly of private city buses here.
Mr. Madhwaraj said that the construction of the JNURM City Bus Stand on 41 cents of land at Old DDPI Office in the heart of the city would be of great help to the people. Though there was demand for low-floored government buses for a long time from the citizens, it had now materialised. He had not bowed to any pressure from any lobby on this issue.
He said that the people especially students, senior citizens, and others would be able to avail concessional travel within the city by taking bus passes.
Although 28 low-floored buses had been sanctioned for the city, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) had given route permits for 12 bus routes in the city at present.
He had told principals of all colleges to do a survey of students coming from suburban areas so that the remaining 18 buses could be run to suburban areas for their benefit. The remaining routes in suburban areas would be fixed on the basis of this survey. Presently the 12 buses were expected to do 120 trips a day in the city, he said.
The government had also transferred three acres of land belonging to the Public Works Department (PWD) to Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). A modern KSRTC Bus Stand would be constructed here at a cost of Rs. 5 crore. This would help the tourists and pilgrims coming to Udupi, Mr. Madhwaraj said.
