Mangaluru, Jan 12: In a daring robbery, unidentified persons made away with cash and valuables worth over Rs 6 crore including gold, weighing 22-kg, from Sri Bhagavathi Co-Operative Bank Ltd at BC Road on the outskirts of the city.
The major burglary which might have occurred anytime between last Friday night and wee hours of Monday, came to light around 10.a.m on Monday, when the employees opened the door after two days of holiday.
The thieves gained entry into the unmanned bank building located on National Highway 75 through the backside window and managed to defuse the siren before entering strong-room.
It is suspected that the intruders broke open the safe locker with the help of tools such as iron rods.
Officials have noticed several similarities between the modus operandi of thieves who stole valuables and money at a Co-operative Bank under the limits of Karkala police station recently and that of the BC Road bank burglars. Fingerprint experts from Mangaluru who rushed to the spot also expressed the same opinion.
After the spot investigation the police have come to a conclusion that it was an act of professional robbers who seized the opportunity of two consecutive holidays i.e. Saturday and Sunday to execute their plan.
Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Dr Sharanappa, told coastaldigest.com after visiting the spot that the security loopholes helped the thieves to loot the bank. He said that the bank authorities have apparently disregarded the security of the bank.
He said the bank did not have a security guard during the night and that CCTVs were also not installed outside the premises.
However, Dr Sharanappa expressed confidence that police would nab the culprits soon. Three special teams would be formed to trace the thieves.
