Mangalore, Aug 19: Just ten days after they rescued a woman from drowning in the bathing ghats of Netravathi, alert employees of the Dharmasthala temple once again averted a suicide bid on Sunday night. This time a, 40-year-old teacher, also from Bangalore, had jumped into the swollen river but was rescued by temple staff.
Ramya (name changed) left for the temple town from Bangalore in a bus on Sunday at around 10pm without informing her family consisting of her husband, a government employee, daughter studying in BCom and son, a class 7 student.
On reaching Dharmasthala very late in the night, she headed straight to the bathing ghats and jumped into it. Hearing the screams of bystanders, temple employees rushed to her rescue.
Staffers Prashanth and Raghava threw her a rope for her to hold on to and with the help of locals brought her ashore. Noticing that she had taken in a lot of water, the locals administered her first aid at the bathing ghat itself. Later, she was shifted to the temple's rest room and provided further treatment. Her husband was informed and the temple authorities assured to send her back with him after he arrived.
Rekha, a teacher in government primary school, said that snide remarks from outsiders, criticism and insensitive comments had compelled her to take this extreme step. Following advice from D Veerendra Heggade, dharmadhikari of the temple, and a darshan of the presiding deity along with her husband, Rekha said, "This is rebirth for me. All my sins have washed away. Henceforth, I will lead my life unfazed by others' comments."
