Udupi, Jun 1: A world class swimming pool would be constructed soon in Udupi to encourage swimmers in the coastal district, said Abhayachandra Jain, Minister for Youth Services and Sports.

The renovated court had been constructed using teakwood and would go a long way in encouraging shuttle badminton in the district, he said. The renovation had cost Rs. 45 lakh.
Oscar Fernandes, MP, had suggested increasing the size of the district swimming pool. However, as the necessary funds for the construction of the pool as per an earlier approved design had already been released, another big swimming pool would be sanctioned for Udupi soon, Mr. Jain said.
Prakash Kodavoor, secretary of the district shuttle badminton association, said the association was planning to hold a national-level Under-13 and Under-15 shuttle badminton tournament at the renovated court in a couple of months.
He sought financial help from the Ministry of Youth Services and Sports for the event. Mr. Jain said that he would consider the request.
