Mangaluru, Mar 26: A 33-year-old man and his three-month-old daughter died in a freak accident when they were thrown out of an auto-rickshaw after the three-wheeler brushed against a stationary container truck and lost balance on Mani-Madikeri Highway in Sullia of Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday night.
The deceased have been identified as Chittaranjan (35) and his daughter Lia (3 months), residents of Peraje in Madikeri. Lia’s mother Manjula (30) suffered injuries in the mishap.
According to police, on Saturday, the family of three boarded an auto-rickshaw at Aletti in Sullia. At 9.30pm, when the auto-rickshaw was plying on the Mani-Mysuru highway, the driver failed to notice a tyre that was placed on the road by a container lorry driver.
Police said the lorry driver was repairing his heavy-duty vehicle, and had irresponsibly placed the tyre on the highway. Failing to see it, auto-rickshaw driver Seetharam drove over it, due to which Chittaranjan and Lia were thrown on to the road, and sustained severe head injuries, after which they died.
According to complainant Manjula, the autorickshaw driver was driving in a rash way and the vehicle lost balance after hitting the tyre placed on the road. Consequently, the three-wheeler brushed against the container truck by which time her husband and the baby were thrown out of the vehicle onto the road. Sullia police have registered a case and are investigating.
