Bangalore, Sep 19: Nearly 350 students of a government school in Bangalore were admitted to a hospital on Friday due to food poisoning after having their mid-day meals.

The children of the DJ Halli Urdu Government School complained of nausea and vomiting soon after they had their lunch allegedly supplied by International Society for Promotion of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

Zameer Ahmed, a teacher at the school said, "We got the food from Iskcon centre. We began serving students from Class I to VII. Then one of our teachers saw a lizard in the box. There was panic and we rushed to the hospital."

"We do plan to question the authorities on how they can serve food like this," he said.

Iskcon, however, has denied that the food was provided by them. "We would like to bring to your notice that the reported news is incorrect and defamatory as Iskcon Food Relief Foundation has no kitchen in Bangalore and therefore does not serve food in Bangalore," a statement issued by a senior executive at Iskcon said.

The Iskcon official said in his statement that it is another NGO, Akshaya Patra, which is operational in the area.

Dr Shivakumar of the Ambedkar Hospital said, "About 350 students came in here. They complained of abdominal pain and vomiting. We gave them the treatment. Now around 70 are still here of which 20 are under observation."

Dr Shivakumar said the sample of the food has been sent to the forensic lab. The report is awaited.

Senior police officials said they are investigating the incident. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar said, "The condition of the children is stable. After spotting the lizard, the children began to complain of abdominal pain and vomiting."

œAround 350 students have fallen ill and have been admitted to Ambedkar Hospital. Most of them have returned home after getting the treatment, Health Minister U T Khader told reporters here.

œWhen we came here many children had gone home after getting the treatment. No one should panic and create confusion ¦ we have to clear confusion and fear among parents and children, he said.

œ ¦ We will discuss this with the department concerned, investigate the matter and take action ¦, he said. Transport Minister Ramlinga Reddy, who visited the hospital, said 350 children took ill but they were now œalright and will be discharged soon .

Anxious parents rushed to the hospital, making it tough for the police to control them. The children were brought to the hospital around 3.30 pm with complaints of vomiting sensation, Anjaneya, Manager, Ananda Social and Educational Trust which runs the hospital, said.

He said doctors were told that a lizard was found in the food served to the children. According to him the children were brought to the hospital and about 30 had already been discharged. œOthers are undergoing treatment. There is no serious case.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
