Kasaragod, May 20: A group of mechanical engineering students of Sadguru Swami Nithyananda Engineering College here has developed a scooter that can run on petrol and electricity.

The ‘hybrid’ scooter was designed by K.R. Sagar, Rahul Mohan, K. Mithun, Sajith Sukumaran, Yadhu Krishnan after working for 14 months.

The scooter consists of both petrol and electric engines. Initially, the vehicle will run on electric engine and once it reaches 30 to 35 km per hour, will automatically switch over to petrol mode. The scooter therefore has the twin advantage of less pollution and reduced petrol consumption.

The vehicle will get recharged automatically while running, the students told reporters here in the presence of their teachers recently.

The students were guided by Sreeraj, assistant professor, and Rajesh Rai, head of the department.

The cost of designing the scooter came up to Rs.1.15 lakh and would go down if bulk produced, Dr. Rajesh Rai said.
