Mangaluru, Apr 30: Bus operators in the coastal city have positively responded to the all-Indian bandh called by All India Road Transport Workers' (AIRTW) on Thursday, in protest against higher penalties for drivers proposed in the ‘Road Transport & Safety Bill’
Most of the buses and a few auto-rickshaws remained off the roads in Mangaluru in the morning.
Even though Karnataka State Bus Owners’ Federation, Kanara Bus Owners Association and Dakshina Kannada City Bus Owners Association have denied support for the dawn-to-dusk strike in the district, no buses were seen on the main roads in the city.
However, no untoward incident is reported from any part of the city, wherein the formal inauguration of the 19th Federation Cup – Senior Athletics Championship 2015 is scheduled at 5:15 p.m. The strike will end by 6 p.m.
Labour unions such as CITU, AITUC, BMS, HMS, INTUC and other transport labour unions including auto-rickshaw unions have offered their support to the nation-wide bandh, to show their objection to the proposed road transport bill introduced by the BJP-led NDA government.
The bus drivers and conductors employed by private bus operators have also offered their support to the bandh by not resuming their duties on April 30, informed Motor Transport and Engineering Workers Union general secretary Vasantha Achari and CITU Bus Workers Union president Ashok and secretary Vishwanath Kulal.
