Mangaluru, Sep 13: Dakshina Kannada district administration has issued a notice to all medical establishments such as private hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, laboratories and scanning centres, to display the price list of all medical services and treatment offered by them, to ensure that the patients are not charged with exorbitant rates.

A few hospitals and private clinics have their own fixed rates for certain medical services and facilities without any regulation. Since there is an increase in instances where the patients are unable to render the high medical fees demanded by certain hospitals at the time of emergencies, the district administration has come forward to regulate the prices of healthcare facilities in all medical institutions. This regulation will be done under the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act.
As per the decision taken by the district administration, the private medical and clinical establishments should display the minimum rates applicable for normal deliveries, caesarean deliveries and treatment of illnesses such as common fever.
In addition to this, the patient and next of kin should be informed if further treatment is required in case of complications or deterioration of health, before providing the treatment. Similarly, the charges applicable for medical procedures such as operations, consultancy and various tests including X-ray, scanning and CT scanning should be put on display at counters.
For in-patients admitted in the hospital, the amount charged for being admitted each day in general ward, semi general ward, special ward, super deluxe ward and Intensive Care Unit should also be made available at the time of admission. If variation arises in the cost, the concerned medical staff should inform the patients of the variation.
The above rules will also be applicable to the facilities in privately-owned laboratories as well.
