Bengaluru, Aug 30: An aspiring Sandalwood actor who was producing his own launch vehicle and a makeup man of a Kannada film heroine masterminded and executed the kidnap of the son of a top executive of a Kirloskar company. All the six accused were arrested.

Ishan Bapat, 19, a student of Nitte Institute of Technology, was abducted on his way back to his Malleswaram home from the Yelahanka college last Tuesday evening, August 23, and released the next morning after police launched a massive rescue operation.

Muniyappa, alias Munna, alias Eshwar, 29, a KR Puram resident and producer-hero of Challenger, a Kannada movie in the making, was assisted by Hassan Dhongri Mohammed Ghouse, 26, of Kodigehalli, a former makeup artist.

Police said Eshwar and Dhongri were desperately in need of money to see through Challenger, which was stalled, and took help from Yelahanka residents Jagadish Muni Anjanappa, 32, Jagannatha Muniyappa alias Dummajaga, 28, and Manoj Raj alias Kencha, to execute the kidnap.

City police commissioner NS Megharikh said the accused first tried to blackmail Ishan's girlfriend, saying they would upload pictures of her and Ishan. "Their blackmail did not work with Ishan and the girl as they didn't respond," he said. The culprits had found out about Ishan's affluent background after they saw him travelling in posh cars and living in a bungalow at Malleswaram.

"As planned, Eshwar and Hassan Dhongri abducted Ishan from near his college on the evening of August 22 and called Ishan's mother from his phone, saying her son had been abducted and would be released for a ransom of Rs 50 lakh," police said.

Holding Ishan at knifepoint, the duo roamed all over the city through the night in their Matiz. Early on August 23, the abductors were near Jalahalli when Dhongri, who was driving, alerted Muniyappa about what looked like a speeding vehicle tailing them. Mistaking a cab for a police vehicle, they stopped the Matiz and freed Ishan before speeding away, "police said.

Police initially thought the kidnappers were someone known to him, either friends or classmates. "When Ishan's friend revealed how strangers had tried to blackmail her and Ishan, we found out that they were professional offenders," DCP (northeast) PS Harsha said.

As media reports began hinting at Ishan's friends executing the plot, the accused felt emboldened to try blackmailing Ishan's friend again. On Sunday, Dhongri called her, asking her to cough up Rs 2 lakh, and boasted that police had not touched them even four days after the kidnap. "The girl contacted us immediately and we laid a trap. Dhongri, happy the girl was bringing money, walked into our trap near Jalahalli. We arrested the gang in the evening," police said.

S-I turns auto driver

On Sunday morning, Ishan's friend got a call. The caller claimed he and his gang was behind Ishan's kidnap and demanded the girl pay Rs 2 lakh to get back her photos with Ishan.

The girl immediately got in touch with DCP (northeast) PS Harsha. As directed, the girl called Dhongri, saying she would pay up the money. Dhongri asked her to come near Gantaganahalli, near Yelahanka, on a two-wheeler around 5pm.

"We got Chikkajala police sub-inspector Naveen Kumar to dress like an auto driver and hired an auto for him to drive. Naveen waited near the college and the girl called Dhongri on reaching the place. But Dhongri asked her to come to another place nearby. She told Dhongri she would take an autorickshaw since she was new to the area and didn't know Kannada. On nearing the designated spot, she again called Dhongri, saying the auto driver was refusing to ferry her further.Dhongri said he would come and meet her. Five inspectors in plainclothes in cabs had already reached the place. When Dhongri arrived, we swooped down on him," Harsha said.

How the script went awry

'Struggling for Success' reads the tagline for Chal lenger, the under production Sandalwood film whose hero Eshwar has now landed in a police lockup, in a botched kidnap for ransom case.

Eshwar's struggles, though, were mostly of the illegal variety, landing him in trouble. A student of a private college in Seshadripuram, he had kidnapped the daughter of a then MLC and forcibly married her in 2008, only to face a kidnap case. However, the marriage broke up two years later, and the girl divorced him over his shady background. Eshwar was arrested in 2012 for chain-snatching reported from five police stations in Bengaluru. In 2013, he was accused of dacoity, robbery and chain-snatching in Arasikere, Hassan and surrounding areas.

A year ago, Eshwar had produced and directed several episodes for a private TV channel, titled `Idu Katheyalla, Jeevana' (This is not a story, but life). "Eshwar planned to abduct a big industrialist who lives in Sadashivnagar. But police patrol and convoys of MLAs passing through the area unnerved Eshwar," police sources said. Eshwar's associate, Hassan Dhongri, a former staffer of a Kannada heroine, joined the Challenger team and even snatched a woman's chain near Solur to raise funds for the movie.

devaraje gowda.jpg

In a fresh claim, arrested BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda has alleged that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and four other ministers were behind exposing Prajwal Revanna’s sex scam that has brought disgrace to Janata Dal (Secular) H D Deve Gowda family.

Devaraje Gowda has been arrested in a sexual abuse case.

Speaking to reporters while being taken to the district prisons, in Hassan on Friday, Gowda alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore to drag the name of H D Kumaraswamy in the Prajwal’s case.

“D K Shivakumar had offered me Rs 100 crore to project that H D Kumaraswamy was behind the case. The offer was made through ministers N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister. They had even sent Rs 5 crore as advance to Bowring Club. But I did not agree. Hence, they hatched a plot to trap me,” Gowda alleged.

“It is D K Shivakumar, who collected all information from Prajwal Revanna’s former car driver Karthik and readied the pen drive. A team of four ministers were formed to handle the issue. As I did not agree to the plan. They planned to bring disrepute to the BJP, Narendra Modi and H D Kumaraswamy,” he said.

Gowda further alleged that former MLC M A Gopalaswamy of Channarayapatna was sent to him for negotiation.

“The main intention of D K Shivakumar is to bring disrepute to Modi and BJP in the case. Besides, he wanted to defame H D Kumaraswamy’s leadership in the state” he claimed. “They filed a sexual harassment and rape case against me, but found no evidence. Now, they are trying to fix me in the pen drive case” he alleged.

revannaarrest.jpg

Bengaluru, May 5: In a major development, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the sex video scandal involving JD-S MP Prajwal Revann on Saturday arrested his father and JD-S MLA H.D. Revanna following the rejection of his anticipatory bail plea in a victim kidnapping case by the People’s Representative Court in Bengaluru.

H.D. Revanna was taken into custody from the residence of his father and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda in Bengaluru’s Padmanabhanagar locality.

First, he was taken to the SIT office on the premises of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). After preliminary questioning, the former JD-S minister was taken to the Bowring Hospital for a medical check-up.

Sources said he will be produced before the magistrate at the latter's residence later.

Commenting on the development, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told mediapersons that he won’t interfere in the matter.

“Action should be initiated as per the law,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said, “We will not interfere in anything related to this matter. Let them get protection from the court under the law."

Shivakumar also said that let the proceedings follow the manner suggested by former CM H.D. Kumaraswamy.

Quoting a Kannada proverb, Kumaraswamy had said that those who commit crime must be punished.

The SIT officers reached the former PM’s residence soon after the court turned down his anticipatory bail plea in a case related to the kidnapping of a woman who was allegedly sexually assaulted by his son Prajwal Revanna, the sources said.

Earlier on Saturday, the SIT traced the kidnapped woman to the farmhouse of Rajashekar, the personal assistant (PA) to H.D. Revanna, at Kalenahalli village in Mysuru district.

In the court, Special Public Prosecutor B.N. Jagadish submitted that the case is about saving the life of a poor woman.

Jagadish argued that H.D. Revanna did not turn up before the authorities even after being served three notices.

Senior counsel Muthy D. Naik, appearing for H.D. Revanna, argued that the only allegation against his client is a statement that he had called the victim to his residence.

Barring this, there is nothing to prove the role of H.D. Revanna in this case, he argued, adding that the statement was made by an accused in the case, with whom his client has no connections.

He also claimed that the SIT has deliberately added IPC Section 364A, which attracts life imprisonment and capital punishment, to ensure that his client’s bail plea is rejected.

The other IPC Sections invoked in the case — 363 and 365 — attract imprisonment of less than seven years. Therefore, to prove the innocence of H.D. Revanna, he should be granted bail, Naik submitted.

Meanwhile, the woman, who had gone missing on April 29, was found locked up in the farmhouse when the SIT officers reached there following a tip-off.

Sources said Rajashekar is absconding ever since the SIT traced the missing woman to his farmhouse.

The woman is being brought to Bengaluru where her statement will be recorded.

On Friday, Karnataka Police registered an FIR against H.D. Revanna in connection with the kidnapping of the woman, believed to be one of the victims of the sex video scandal involving his son Prajwal Revanna.

The woman’s son had registered a kidnap case naming H.D. Revanna as the prime accused in the case.

His relative Satish Babu was named as the second accused in the FIR, whom the police arrested from Mysuru district on Friday.

The woman’s son alleged that his mother went missing after the surfacing of a purported sex video in which Prajwal Revanna could be seen sexually assaulting her.

He also alleged that his mother was locked up in an undisclosed location, as he pleaded with the police to initiate legal action against H.D. Revanna and Satish Babu.

Prajwal Revanna, the sitting JD-S MP from Hassan, has reportedly fled from the country.
