New Delhi, Aug 20: It's time to bid farewell your companion of the early '90s - Internet Explorer (IE). In a statement, tech giant Microsoft confirmed in their blog post on Monday that the browser service will be replaced with its new sibling Microsoft Edge that was launched five years ago.

By August 17 next year, the Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support IE 11. Instead, the tech company is pushing users to install the new and revamped Chromium-based Edge browser.

Starting December this year, the web app - Teams - will also not support IE 11.

Customers will experience poor service or will not be able to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services on IE 11 after the above mentioned dates. The company also said new Microsoft 365 features will not be available or certain features may cease to work when accessing the app or service via IE 11.

Calling the 2013 IE 'less sophisticated' in today's landscape, MS said that Edge will give better and more innovative online experiences. Edge came to the resume after Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox stole IE's limelight.

The company also announced it would end support for the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app on March 9 next year. After that, the desktop app will not receive new security updates.

While many Twitter users bid their final goodbyes to the browser, some posted memes.
