Bengaluru, Jun 28: Bharathi Veerath, known as Bengaluru's first woman cab driver, was found dead at her rented house in Nagashettyhalli, off Ballari Road in the city under mysterious circumstances.
Hailing from Warangal in Telangana, Bharathi made headlines when she became one of the earliest cab drivers in the city.
She quit her tailoring job and joined Sangama, an NGO that worked for sexual minorities. She learnt driving during her stint at the NGO and went on to join an all-woman cab service, Angel City Cabs, before enlisting with Uber in 2014.
Although no suicide note was found at her house, Sanjaynagar police suspect it could be one. They added that Bharathi had been planning to return to Warangal and had sought a transfer of gas connection and informed her employer that she would stop working.
The high school dropout had dreamt big—after moving to Bengaluru at age 28, she had steadily worked her way up. She had bought a Ford Fiesta, and had dreamt of owning a Mercedes one day. Last year, she had told a news agency that she was thinking of getting married.
