From Big B to Yo Yo Honey Singh, Bollywood stars victim of celebrity death hoax

Chandigarh, Jun 9: Celebrity death hoax is a concept not new to India anymore. Recent rumour about the death of Bollywood rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh in a car accident was dispelled by the singer himself, when he later posted on the micro -blogging website Twitter, "News of YoYo's accident is a fake rumour must be spread by some haters. Please don't bother and Keep blessing YoYo."

Yo Yo Honey Singh is not the only celebrity to fall prey to such rumours.

We give you the list of Bollywood stars killed by the rumour mill.

AMITABH BACHCHAN

In June 2012, a fake news item about actor Amitabh Bachchan's death in a car accident spread through a blog post which said, "Amitabh Bachan died in a single vehicle crash on Route 80 between Morristown and Roswell. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics responding to the vehicle accident".

The blogpost went on to give details about the superstar's funeral also.

“Memorial services for Amitabh Bachan have not yet been announced. The service is expected to be a closed casket funeral due to the severe head trauma. Additional details and information will be forthcoming as they become available.”

DILIP KUMAR

In September 2011, there was a rumour that Dilip Kumar's health is getting worse. Some tweets even spread news of his death. Later, Dilip Kumar's wife Saira Banu issued a public statement clarifying that the actor is in good health and in high spirits.

RAJINIKANTH

The news of Rajinikanth's death spread in May 2011. The mega star issued a statement later to clarify the hoax.

LATA MANGESHKAR

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar also became the victim of an online death hoax. Internet was abuzz with rumours this March that the singer had passed away.

The 82-year-old singer had clarified the rumour on Twitter saying, "Namaskar. Please don't believe any rumours which are doing the rounds about my health and well-being. All is well, by the grace of god."

RAJESH KHANNA

Late legendary actor Rajesh Khanna also became victim death rumours on social networking sites. Akshay Kumar later on tweeted to clear the air.

"All those spreading rumours, a humble request, get your facts right before reporting. And for those genuinely concerned and inquiring about my father in-law's health, he is doing fine now and on the road to recovery. Thank you for your good wishes."

ASHA PAREKH

Within a week of weaving rumours of legendary singer Lata Mangeskar's death, social media became abuzz with the news of Asha Parekh's death. Celebrities like Sanjay Manjrekar and senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai also tweeted about her demise.

Tweet confirming that the Bollywoood diva is 'hale and hearty' came a little late.

Adah Sharma, who played the supporting actress in `Hasee to Phasee` tweeted: " Asha Parekh is hail and hearty ! Just spoke to her! Stop spreading rumours !!!"

KADER KHAN

News of seasoned Bollywood actor Kader Khan spread on social networking sites in February last year. Rumours gained traction when an “RIP Kader Khan” Facebook page popped up, after which many took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to pass on their condolences.

Balaji Motion Pictures CEO Tanuj Garg cleared the air saying, “Kader Khan is fine. Why then are people bombarding my inbox with bad news?”

MADHURI DIXIT

Bollywood's Dhak Dhak girl was no exception to this trend. Rumours spread that the Madhuri died due to a massive heart attack. Condolences started occupying the virtual space till the air was cleared by the actor herself. A woman bearing the same name had died and this led to entire confusion.

AISHWARYA RAI BACHCHAN

The former Miss World and Bachchan Bahu has been perhaps one of the first Bollywood star to be a victim of celebrity death hoax. In 2006, a story carried by Global Associated News suggested that Aishwarya Rai Bachchcan had died in a car accident. It reported that the actress was under the infulence of alcohol and died on the spot. Her manager refuted such claims after a lot of confusion.

NANA PATEKAR

Death rumours on social media offended Nana Patekar in September last year. If the social media reports were to be believed Patekar had died because of a heart attack.

The actor strongly reacted saying that he gives attacks and does not get them.

BAPPI LAHIRI

Bappi Lahiri has died many death in the virtual world, quite literally. In February this year when Lahiri joined BJP, news of his death also started making rounds on the social media.

Targeting the rumour mongers, Lahiri said that people who are jobless only indulge in such acts.

AYUSHMANN KHURRANA

In April last year, a website called Global Associated News reported that Ayushmann Khurrana had died after a snowboard accident in Switzerland. The report suggested that the accident happened when the actor was on holidaying with friends and family.

The news took twitter by the fire. Some even went on to tweet "RIP Ayushmann Khurrana'. Later the actor took to twitter to dispel the rumours saying, "I have been hearing some bizarre rumors about my demise. RIP rumor mongers. Thanks!'
