Udupi, Aug 31: The judicial custody of 21 accused in the assault and murder Praveen Poojary, a BJP leader from Kejoor village in Udupi district, has been extended for 15 days by a district court.
Hebri police produced all the accused in Udupi court and magistrate Rajesh Karnam extended their judicial custody till September 15. After the proceedings all the accused were taken to Hiryadka prison under tight security.
Praveen Kumar, senior assistant public prosecutor was present during the hearing. Seven accused were arrested on August 18 and 15 were arrested on 19 August. All of them were remanded to judicial custody up to August 31. Of the 21 accused, 19 were arrested on murder charges while two were held for provoking others to kill Poojary.
Karkala circle inspector Ajay Anthony is the investigation officer in the case. Lawyer Ravi Kiran appealed for bail at the district and sessions court for Arvind Koteshwara, leader of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike, who was arrested for provoking others to murder Poojary. The trial was postponed to September 2.
29-year-old Praveen Poojary was beaten to death by a group of Hindutva activists on August 17 for allegedly involving in illegal cow transportation.
