Kalaburagi, Mar 11: In an embarrassing moment for Bharatiya Janata Party, its local leaders assaulted two party cadres following differences in appointing an in-charge for a zilla panchayat constituency in Gulbarga Rural Assembly constituency for the elections here on Saturday.
Shivaling Tengali and Mahesh, party workers from Aurad, were injured in the assault and have been admitted to the district hospital.
Lakshman, MLA and president of the Telangana BJP unit, and Sugunakar, national secretary of the BJP farmers’ wing, who are the in-charges of Gulbarga Rural assembly constituency, were present.
According to sources, a meeting of heads of booth-level units and other leaders was held at the party office for finalising in-charges for each zilla panchayat ward. When Basavaraj Mattigud, native of Mattigud in Chittapur taluk and ZP member from Adki ward in Sedam taluk, was proposed as in-charge for Aurad ZP constituencies, some workers opposed on the grounds that Mr. Mattigud was not a native of Aurad.
They also sought a local leader. The arguments escalated into physical violence. Supporters of Mr. Mattigud reportedly attacked the victims.
