Mangaluru, Nov 5: A woman in Mangaluru taluk was left poorer by Rs 32 lakhs as she was duped by an online fraud racket.
The woman, a resident of Bajpe in Mangaluru taluk, was initially made to believe that she won a huge cash prize. Then the fraudsters extracted money from her in the name of customs duty.
According to police, the woman had received an email in June which stated that she won 4,85,000 US Dollars (nearly Rs 3 crore) in a contest conducted from a cellphone making company headquartered in California.
The unsuspecting woman replied to the mail and the scamsters asked her to pay certain amount towards customs duty for the prize money.
Accordingly she deposited the money in the account number the scamsters had sent to her. Later, they kept on asking money stating for documentation and other procedures to be followed.
When she did not get the prize money even a few days after he paid them, she grew suspicious and filed a complaint at the cyber crime police station.
Police said that woman had paid nearly Rs 32 lakh to fraudsters by taking loan and she had no clue about whose account she has deposited the money.
