Udupi, Jan 17: A celebratory atmosphere prevailed in the temple town as the biennial Paryaya festival in which the 85-year-old Pejawar mutt seer Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swami ascended the Paryaya Peetha for the fifth time creating a new history in the legacy of 800 and odd years of the famed Sri Krishna temple.

The seer took charge of the puja rights of Lord Srikrishna from Sri Vidyavallabha Tirtha Swami of Kaniyur Mutt and ascended the “Paryaya Sarvajna Peetha” at 6 am inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

No seer of the Ashta Mutts or eight mutts of Udupi has ascended the Paryaya Peetha over four times ever since the biennial Paryaya system began in 1522.

Paryaya denotes transfer of power of the exclusive rights of worshipping Lord Krishna and management of the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple from one seer to another seer of the Astha Mutts once in two years in turns. The city was teeming with devotees who had come not just from different parts of the State but also the country. The Car Street saw a maximum number of devotees going around visiting not just the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple, which was the cynosure of all eyes but also the Ashta Mutts or eight mutts of Udupi.

In fact, the queue to offer prayers to Lord Krishna at the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple was so long that it stretched nearly to the Rajangana Parking Space. Since Udupi is known as “Anna Brahma Kshetra,” there was a massive rush for the afternoon meals as well at the dining halls of the Sri Krishna Mutt.

Even the store-hall, where rice, coconuts and vegetables such as pumpkins, Mangalore cucumber, Mattu Gulla, Elephant Yams, and others were stored, was a centre of attraction. This was because the vegetables were kept in a systematic way and eye-catching.

Meanwhile, the cooks had a busy time at the temporary kitchen, created behind the Adhoksha Mantapa. They were cooking food for over 75,000 devotees.

Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swami was born on April 27, 1931 as the second child of Narayanacharya and Kamalamma, a devout couple from Ramakunja. They named child as Venkataramana. The then head of the Pejawar mutt, Sri Vishvamanya Theertha Swami, initiated Venkataramana as a Sanyasi when he was eight years old.

The initiation happened on December 3, 1938 at Chakratheertha near Hampi and Venkataramana became Sri Vishwesha Theertha, upon initiation. The young Sanyasi completed his early education in Udupi. The head of the Bhandarakeri Mutt, Sri Vidyamanya Theertha Swami, taught all the Shastras to the young Yati for eight years and helped transform him into a knowledgeable and erudite scholar of Vedanta and Shastras.

Sri Madhwacharya, the proponent of ‘Dwaitha’ (Dualism) philosophy who installed the ‘Saligrama Shila’ idol of Lord Srikrishna here about 800 years ago, also blessed the eight (Ashtha) mutts with eight young Yatis to perform Lord Srikrishna’s puja rituals on a rotation basis. Later, seer Sri Vadiraja Swami of Sri Sode Mutt modified this by introducing the biennial Paryaya system by changing the two-month term into a two-year term among the seers of Ashtha mutts on rotation in 1522. Since then, the celebrations of handing over the charges of the puja rights have been a grand event with people’s participation.

The current cycle is the 32nd of the biennial Paryaya and the Pejawar Mutt is the eighth mutt in the order of succession to the Paryaya Peetha in the cycle. The cycle starts with Palimar Mutt followed by Admar, Krishnapura, Puttige, Shiroor, Sode, and Kaniyur Mutts, ending with Pejawar Mutt.

Row over Puttige seer’s presence

Puttige Mutt seer Sugunendrateertha Swami said on Sunday night that the controversy surrounding his presence in the Paryaya ceremony remains unresolved.

He told reporters after the first round talks with the senior and junior seers of the Pejawar Mutt that the first round of talks was a failure as they could not come to any consensus. A few seers of the Asta Mutt are opposing his presence, as he has undertaken foreign travel, considered a taboo for pontiffs. However, Vishweshateertha Swami, the incoming Paryaya pontiff, is okay with his presence.

He declined to name the seers opposing his presence. “I am under pressure from my followers and disciples to attend,” the Puttige seer said. Later in the night, the pontiff told a press conference that he would stay away from the celebrations after a deal was brokered.

Bengaluru: In a shocking revelation, a former member of Hassan Zilla Panchayat (ZP) has accused incumbent JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna of raping her multiple times over three years and videographing the alleged crime.

A case was registered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) based on the statement by the 44-year-old survivor on Wednesday, May 1.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman claimed that when she was a ZP member she used to visit the MLAs and MPs for various development works.

In one such instance in 2021, she met Prajwal seeking his help to get hostel seats for some female students at a local college. The woman, in her statement, said that since the MP was busy, she was asked to meet him the next day.

“The following day I visited the MP at his office and the MP's quarters in Hassan. The staff present there told me to wait on the first floor as there were many others in the hall. Prajwal spoke to some of the women waiting there, spoke with them and sent them off until I was the only one left,” the woman alleged.

As per the survivor, the MP then called her inside a room and she obliged.

“He held my hand, pulled me inside and locked the door. When I asked him why was he closing the door, he told me nothing would happen and made me sit on the bed. He said my husband should talk less and warned me of the consequences. He also said that because of my husband, his mother, Bhavani Revanna, missed the MLA ticket. He told me that if my husband wants to grow politically, I should listen to him [Prajwal],” the woman alleged.

Next, Prajwal allegedly told the woman to lie down on the bed and undress. When the woman refused and said that she would shout, Prajwal allegedly threatened her that he had a gun and warned of dire consequences for her and her husband.

The woman alleged that Prajwal took out his mobile phone and then raped her.

“He raped me and sexually assaulted me and recorded the act on his mobile phone,” the woman alleged. “He threatened to leak the video if I ever spoke about it and told me to be there whenever he wanted. After that, he used to video call me frequently, ask me to be naked during the call and raped me in multiple instances.”

The woman claimed that she was scared and did not make the incident public and chose to come forward after she learnt of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Karnataka government to probe the alleged Hassan sex scandal.

A case was registered under Sections 376(2)(n) (commits rape repeatedly on the same woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1)(physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and 354C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Prajwal is also accused in a sexual harassment case along with his father, Holenarasipur MLA HD Revanna, registered at the Holenarasipur police station in Hassan on April 28.

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has taken a step towards enhancing aircraft safety and has planned to install a Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday. The project involves various works related to the PAL system and aims to be completed in 20 months.

The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the ministry of civil aviation and the civil aviation safety and security regulator. The PAL CAT 1 system will provide pilots with improved visibility of runway 24 and guidance during their final landing approach. The system will be installed 900m from the threshold of runway 24, as this end of the runway accounts for 90% of aircraft landings at the airport.

The PAL will be mounted on approximately 18 lattice structures, which is a unique feature of the project. The lights will be fixed to frangible T-shaped structures. The project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, which has already been completed and is awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: Former union minister C M Ibrahim, who was expelled from Janata Dal (Secular) for protesting against party’s alliance with BJP, has stressed on need for a third front not just at the national level, but also in Karnataka.

Addressing a news conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday, he said he’s planning to form a third front in Karnataka along with Lingayat Seer Dingaleshwar Swami.

Ibrahim said that he will tour the state between April 27 and May 4 and that he would meet Dingaleshwar Swami on April 29. “There is a need for the third front in this country. We will try to establish a third front in association with the seer and we hope we will be successful in those efforts,” he said.

Expressing disappointment with the Congress for not doing enough to gain the full confidence of Muslims, Ibrahim said that Congress is concentrating only on certain communities for votes, and ignoring Muslims.

“The Congress is not even caring for Muslims and Dalit votes. In some Muslim areas they did not even hold campaigns seeking votes and trying to convince the communities which never vote in their favour. I fear this may lead to low turnout and Congress may lose its vote base,” he opined.

Mentioning about guarantees on which Congress is strongly relying during this election, Ibrahim said, such things won’t work all the time. “Guarantees will not work anymore. Every election you need to give something new to the voters,” he added.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that Congress is trying to appease minorities for votes, Ibrahim requested both Congress and BJP parties not bring Muslims between them. “I request both parties. Leave us alone. Don’t make us sandwiches for your political sake. We are living with peace and hope even the Prime Minister will understand this,” Ibrahim added.

Launching a broadside against Prime Minister Deve Gowda, Ibrahim said, “Deve Gowda has sold his personality itself. Whatever I have told about JD(S) has come true. I pity, a former Prime Minister should not have come to this stage,” he said.
