New Delhi, Aug 1: The Centre on Monday released Rs 795.54 crore to Karnataka to provide relief to farmers who lost their rabi (winter) crops in 2016 due to severe drought.

Though the High Power Committee headed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had approved the funds on June 29, the fund was released to the state now, said an official in the Ministry of Finance.
Though the Karnataka government had sought Rs 3,310 crore, the Centre has released only Rs 795 crore saying the state has to develop a mechanism for distributing the money to beneficiary farmers.
Earlier, Karnataka faced the Centre’s wrath for delay in releasing entire funds sanctioned by it to beneficiary farmers, who have lost crops during Kharif reason.
Since all the money sanctioned has to be released directly to beneficiary farmers’ accounts, the Union government blamed the state for failure to collect the farmers’ bank accounts and other details.
Karnataka Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa and Agriculture Minister Krishna Byregowda during their meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh in the last week of June had promised to develop a permanent mechanism to ensure distribution of money to all beneficiary farmers without any delay.
