Bijapur, Jun 18: Four-year-old girl Akshata Patil fell into an open borewell at a farmhouse in Nagathan village of Bijapur district on Tuesday evening. The rescue operations were in full swing on Wednesday to pull out the girl.
It is learnt that the girl fell into the borewell when a stray dog chased her. Both the parents were engaged in work at the time of the incident.
Superintendent of Police Ramnivas Sepat said that the police had been sent to the spot, along with Fire and Emergency Services personnel.
Doctors have also been told to take emergency equipment to the spot, he said. The condition of the girl was not known.
Instances of children falling into open borewells have been making the headlines quite a few times but very little has been done to ensure their safety by the authorities.
In July 2006, a child named Prince fell into an open bore well in Kurukshetra in Haryana and a massive rescue operation was launched amid a heavy media coverage to rescue him.
Prince was rescued after 48 hours. But such tragedies didn't stop.
In 2012, a 5-year-old girl Mahi fell into an abandoned open bore well near Manesar in Haryana and couldn't be saved.
Last month, a three-year-old girl fell into an abandoned borewell in Vadod village in Bhavnagar in Gujarat and was stuck inside as rescue teams rushed to the spot.
In September last year, a six-year-old girl, who fell into a 400-feet borewell in a village in Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu, died in the hospital after a nine-hour-long rescue battle.
