To my teacher, with love

September 5, 2010
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice President of our country and our second President was born on 1888 in a small village called Tiruttani in Tamil Nadu. He respected the teachers’ profession and said that his birthday should be celebrated as Teachers day. Thus, from the year 1962 Teachers day is being celebrated on 5th September every year.

Teachers’ day is also known as the Teachers’ Appreciation Day or National Teachers’ Day. Teachers build the future citizens of the country. Teachers give and they only know to give. Teachers teach us, guide us and inspire us.

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.

Honorable Dr. Abdul Kalamji has said that as a student spends many hours with his teachers during his school & college days which lay the foundation for the rest of his life, the school/college must have teachers who love teaching and have the ability to impart the best to build moral values. He recalls how his father who was a teacher, got furious when one of his students had sent some valuable gift to his house & had told him that “when the Almighty appoints a person to a position, he takes care of his provision. If a person takes anything beyond that, it is an illegal gain” He says a teacher should be a role model and it’s only because of one of his teachers he is what he is today. Kalamji says that during his critical phases of testing, a man was always with him to witness the test and to find solutions to the problems. That was Prof. Satish Dhawan, one of his favorite teachers. So a teacher is not only a role model whom we follow but also he follows us to ensure that we will become the right leaders one day.

Honorable Dr Kalamji has a dream that by the year 2020 India should become the number one country in the world. He believes that we should encourage the children because they are going to be the future citizens of India 2020. If India should become the best, our future citizens must be properly educated. It is possible only through our teachers.

A good teacher is like a candle. A candle consumes itself to light the way for others.

Teachers are suppliers of wisdom. They help us to become noble, sweet and humble. They help us to become visionary and down to earth. Our teachers make us another teacher. Teaching is a profession that teaches all other professions.

Today “Teacher’s Day” is celebrated throughout India. We also celebrated teacher’s day in our School. I would love to tell you about this year’s celebrations. We decorated our class rooms and brought a cake for our teacher. When our teacher entered the class we all wished her and gave flowers & greeting cards. Then we had a short surprise program for our teachers.

In ancient years, people used to send their children to the Guru (teacher) where they will stay with the Guru till they complete their education. This is known as Gurukul system. The Guru had to give all the knowledge and wisdom to his shishya ( student) & when he felt that the student has completed his education only then the student could return to their families. Until then, the Guru was his family. The student served the Guru & his family as a part of leaning process & leant how to respect & serve during this period. They believed and practiced Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu Guru Sakshat Maheshwara meaning Guru is the God.

Teachers are like beacons of light. We should respect them and love them. The respect should remain in our heart forever because whatever we may become tomorrow we will remain as a student for our teachers. Teachers are like our second parents. By respecting our teachers & remembering their contributions & sacrifices they make for us let us make every day of our remaining life a ‘Teachers Day’

“Dear Teacher, Happy Teachers Day. What I am today & going to be tomorrow is because of you”
