St Mary’s island:Natural beauty untouched by evil human hands

February 10, 2011

Here is the island of the most magnificent flora and fauna and the basaltic rocks. Yes we are talking about the St.Marys Island - a bunch of four islands quite near to Udupi and Mangalore and a great tourist attraction these days.

The northernmost island is about a square mile in area and not more than 250 yards in width. It has a coconut grove, which makes it the shadiest island of the group and gives it true South Sea color.

Also known as coconut island, this place is known for its exotic variety of plants, marine animals and rocks. This island is also known for its distinctive geological formation of columnar basaltic lava which is beautiful patterned and crystallized into hexagonal mosaic rocks. Perhaps, this is the only spot in India where basaltic rocks show up such peculiar formations. Also one can find a wide array of shells beautifully carved by the striking waves and tides.

The island seems to have had a legendary history of its own and offers a great scenic view to its admirers. Vasco de Gama is believed to have touched these islands even before he reached Calicut in 1498. Gama called one of the islands "El Padron de Santa Maria."

An island that is still untouched by the evil human hands, it is still natural in its approach and amuses every human with its immense beauty. A place famous for its dawn and dusk, it welcomes us at the port at Malpe where a boat ride takes us across the sea to the island.

Even though u can take all your munchies along with you as there is no such facility in the island, there is a special place where fresh fish from the harbor is cooked and sold which by itself is very appetizing and appealing.

This island is missed out by many of us as it is still not exposed but it serves as an ideal weekend plan for not only a 6 year old but also to a 60 year old! Can be a great day out with family and friends.

Its an ultimate plan for club or organizational outings as it refreshes and soothens minds with the fresh breeze. Even though it is fun to dip our feet into the water, it is not quite advisable when it comes to these islands as water is very harsh in this area and can be hazardous!

Best months can be anytime of the year avoiding the unhealthy rains. The only way to reach there is by the ferry service from Malpe fishing harbor which accounts to about 6 kms. It is approximately 60 kms to the north of Mangalore making it the nearest airport. It is just about 4kms from the religious town of Udupi. It can be very affordable as the transport cost is pretty cheap via road and the boat trip costs not more than 80INR.

Guess you can cancel all your appointments this Sunday and explore this island on your own!
