The officer had been absconding since the complaint accusing him as one among five persons of kidnap and extortion was registered at Basavanahalli Police Station in Chikkamagaluru on Monday.

Chikkamagaluru police were in search of the accused officer. Kallappa Handibag, who was posted in Chikkamagaluru two years ago, was on duty till Sunday evening in Chikkamagaluru.

Tejas Gowda, a resident of Chikkamagaluru, had filed a complaint alleging that the DySP and four others had kidnapped him with the help of a gang of youths on June 28 and he was released only after his friends handed over ransom of Rs. 10 lakh to Kallappa Handibag. Tejas Gowda's friend Pavan had reportedly spoken to the police officer over phone before handing over the cash. The police had collected the audio clips of the conversation.

The officer left the town as he learnt that a case was being registered against him. Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police Santosh Babu had informed the incidents to the Director General and Inspector General of Police. A decision had also been taken to handover the investigation of the case to the Criminal Investigation Department.

Meanwhile, Belagavi Superintendent of Police B.R. Ravikante Gowda told reporters that Kallappa Handibag reportedly committed suicide by hanging at around 8.30 a.m. Relatives of his wife Vidya broke open the door of the bedroom that was on the first floor and rushed him to the Muragod Primary Health Centre, coming under Muragod Police Station limits in Savadatti taluk. The PHC staff referred him to KLE Hospital in Belagavi. However, doctors at the hospital declared Kallappa Handibag as brought dead. The hospital authorities and police are now waiting for Kallappa Handibag's father Basappa to arrive at Belagavi to take up post mortem.

Relatives said that Kallappa Handibag and his wife Vidya, along with their two-year-old son, arrived at Muragod at around 9 p.m. on Monday. They were visiting Vidya's father Siddarayappa Gangappa Tonni. It is said that after dinner, the couple and their child retired to the bedroom on the first floor. They also claimed that Kallappa Handibag committed suicide when his wife was in the bathroom. The police, however, are yet to confirm the details.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
