Mangaluru, Apr 21: Chief Minister Siddramaiah on Thursday dropped a bombshell in Mangaluru by reiterating that Karnataka government is committed to commitment to implement the Yettinahole project and expressed confidence that the project will not fail.
Speaking to reporters after landing at Mangaluru International Airport the CM said the government will also form separate corporations for Yettinahole and Upper Bhadra projects as announced in this year's state budget.
"Yettinahole is a big project entailing an investment of Rs 13,000 crore and no time frame can be given for its completion. We will strive to implement it at the earliest," he said.
Siddaramaiah also maintained that technical reports and expert opinion puts the availability of water from Yettinahole project at more than the 24TMC feet of excess flood waters that the government intends to draw for four months in a year.
Reiterating that project is not about diverting waters of Nethravathi River and it is a misconception on part of those opposed to it, Siddaramaiah while asserting that the government will provide water to the parched districts of the state said there is more than 24TMC feet of water at Yettinahole.
"We will draw excess water only for four months and use it to fill the tanks and lakes in the parched districts and use it only to meet the drinking water requirements of people," he said.
The government simultaneously will also set up an experts' committee to study and report on the availability of water from other alternate sources along with Yettinahole project to provide permanent irrigation facility to drought prone areas of Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts. The demand for (potable) water in these districts is more than 24TMC and the committee will look in to suggestions of alternatives including drawing water from the Sharavathi River, he said.
