Sullia, Sep 18: Sullia police have arrested a man hailing from Kerala, who duped several persons of lakhs of rupees by posing as a CBI officer.
It is revealed that Ravi arrived in Sullia four months ago and began staying at Sannidhi Lodge in the town, claiming that he was the Director General of Police (DGP) of the CBI Department. He was known to be fluent in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and Tulu languages.
The accused was also in possession of a four-wheeler bearing registration number from Delhi. Judging from his behaviour, the locals believed that he was a police officer.
Claiming that he was in need of cash, Ravi became friendly with the manager of the lodge Radhakrishna Nayak and borrowed a few lakhs from him. Apart from this, he also borrowed Rs 1.2 lakh from a relative of Radhakrishna, promising to find him employment.
It is said that Ravi was living in luxury at the lodge, drank expensive liquor and smoked expensive cigarettes. He had not even paid for the room he had rented.
A month ago, he cleared the room and left the town. Upon making enquiries over phone, he told Radhakrishna that he was halted at a lodge in Srirangapatna and threatened him when the latter enquired about his money.
Having suspicions over his claims, Radhakrishna lodged a complaint at Sullia police station. The police then nabbed Ravi from Srirangapatna, following which it was revealed that he had been falsely impersonating a CBI official.
The accused was produced before court and remanded to judicial custody.
