18 killed as buses collide in UP

Lucknow: , April 30: A collision of two buses in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district, about 275 km from here, on Sunday killed as many as 18 people, including women and children, and left over a dozen others injured, according to the police.

The toll may go up and several persons, who have been admitted to hospital, were stated to be critical and battling for life.

According to police sources here, the incident occurred when a private bus bound for the Indo-Nepal border town of Sonouli collided with a roadways bus on the busy Gorakhpur-Sonouli road around noon on Sunday.

“The collision was so severe that the roadways bus climbed over the private carrier. A majority of the deceased were passengers in the private bus,” said Gorakhpur district police chief Ashutosh Kumar.

“Several passengers were trapped inside the buses. Rescue workers had a tough time in extricating them out,” Kumar said.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the private bus lost control over the steering wheel in an attempt to save a van that suddenly appeared before him.

The state government has announced a relief of Rs 1 lakh leach to the next of kin of the deceased while Rs 25,000 will be given to the seriously injured. A magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident.
