Udupi, Apr 16: Amidst ongoing preparations by political parties for impending Panchayat elections in Karnataka, Udupi district committee president of Janata Dal (Secular) has stepped down from the post.

Addressing a press meet here on Thursday Deviprasad Shetty said that he decided to resign from the party post as he had failed to strengthen the party in the coastal district. “The number of active members in the party was decreasing slowly in the district,” he revealed.
He said that he has submitted his resignation letter to former prime minister and JD(S) national president H D Deve Gowda.
Responding to queries, Mr Shetty clarified that he willingly stepped down from the post and that he did not face any pressure within the party. He also clarified that he would not take ‘political sanyas’.
However, he admitted that he had faced differences of opinion from some of the party activists in the district.
“I thank all the leaders and workers of the party for supporting me throughout my 15-year-long tenure as the JD(S) Udupi district president,” he said adding that he would continue to be a member of the party.
Stating that public service and social justice were priorities of his political life, he said that he fought for the people in issues like Padur-Thokur pipeline and land acquisition.
