New Delhi, Aug 12: Mahendra Singh Dhoni might be closing in on a dubious captaincy record held by Stephen Fleming, the coach of the Chennai Super Kings, and West Indies’ Brian Lara.

Fleming and Lara have the highest 16 overseas Test losses as skipper. After the humiliating defeat in the Manchester Test, Dhoni has lost 13 away Test matches, just three short.

After losing a Test match in New Zealand earlier this year, Dhoni surpassed Saurav Ganguly, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and Mohammed Azharuddin as the Indian skipper with the worst away record. Each of the trio had 10 overseas Test defeats. The loss in Wellington was Dhoni's 11th as captain on foreign soil.

Ganguly has the best record as captain on foreign soil with 11 Test victories including two drawn series – in England (2002) and Australia (2003-04). Under Ganguly's captaincy, India also won in West Indies, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

So far, of the 27 Tests Dhoni has led on foreign soil, he has won six.
