Mangalore, May 17: For the first time, the district administration was able to compile an almost defect-less' voters' list with maximum enrollment of eligible voters in Dakshina Kannada constituency in the Lok Sabha Elections 2014, said deputy commissioner and district returning officer A B Ibrahim.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said that the recent elections had seen few innovative initiatives such as hourly display of polling percentage outside each polling booth in the district as well as model polling booths which created a good atmosphere for voters in the polling booths. Due to the efforts of the district administration and all the polling staff, the district saw an unprecedented record of highest polling percentage (77.19%) in these elections, he said, appreciating and lauding the efforts of the polling officers and personnel.
The process of mustering and de-mustering of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the district was simple and kept the work to a minimum. This time, instead of deputing government employees from one taluk for election duty in far off places, they were deputed for polling duty in their respective taluks for their convenience, he said, adding that a total of around 15,000 personnel were involved in the polling process in the district.
Live telecast of counting process
Mr Ibrahim said that the live telecast of the counting process was hailed by his counterparts in the other districts and demystified the entire process. He said that, in this view, he would propose to the Election Commission to implement the live telecast of counting the votes in a local channel in every constituency in the next elections, for convenience of public viewing.
Feedback from polling staff
He also said that the feedback forms provided to the presiding officers at each polling booth which focused on arrangements included minimum number of complaints and largely had suggestions on the improvement of the quality of food served to polling staff. The suggestions will be compiled and sent to the Chief Electoral Officer after processing them, and concrete suggestions written in the forms will be acted on, he said.
He said that the process of enrolling an eligible person in the voters' list was an ongoing process and not limited to the period after the announcement of elections.
