Moodbidri, Nov 17: Beary community is historically known for co-existence with fellow communities in plural society of coastal Karnataka, said Beary activist and entrepreneur Umar Teekay.
He was delivering key note address at Alva's Beary Bhasha Siri', a fest of Beary language, literature and culture, organized as part of 11th edition of Alva's Nudisiri at Vidyagiri, Moodbidri.
Calling Bearys, a peace loving community who mingle with people of all communities, he urged the Beary youth not to fall prey to the communalism and intolerance. “You should not be provoked by anyone,” he said.
Terming Bearys as children of soil of the undivided Dakshina Kannada district, he said that Bearys have proved their presence in all fields.
As many as 18 lakh Bearys are spread across the world. However, most of them are still living in Dakshina Kannada district. Almost of 90 per cent of Muslims of this district are Bearys, he pointed out.
Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader formally inaugurated the programme by watering three coconut saplings at an auditorium named after writer Marhoom Ahmed Noori. The state and entrance door were named after B M Idinabba and Wahhab Doddamane respectively.
Mr Khader hailed the kindheartedness of Dr M Mohan Alva, the chairman of Alva's Education Foundation, saying that people should learn from Alva how to respect other communities in a plural society.
Former education minister B A Mohideen in his presidential remarks thanked Alva for contributing for the development of Beary community by providing education to thousands of Beary children.
B A Mohammed Haneef, president of Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy, delivered welcomed speech. Mangaluru North MLA Mohiuddeen Bawa, former police officer G A Bawa, activist Abdul Rauoof Puthige, eucationist Hajabba, Nudisiri president Dr Siddalingaiah were present among others.
