Bengaluru, Dec 26: Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Anant Kumar Hegde who had recently admitted that he doesn’t even know what secularism is, now stated that he doesn’t know what kind of development people are expecting from the government.

He was speaking at an event titled 'Good Governance Day', organised to celebrate former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday, here.
Mr Hegde, who represents Uttara Kannada constituency in the parliament, said: "We have people who demand development but don't know what kind of development they want. Even our intellectuals think that awarding new contracts means development."
He claimed that members of the public and the media do not discuss issues that are relevant for society but devote their time and energy to dwell on trivial matters. Public participation was essential for good and effective governance, he said.
MLA C N Ashwath Narayan said technology can offer tools to bring about transparency and accountability in governance but it would not be of much use if people do not participate. "Bengaluru provides software solutions to the world but has failed to adopt the technology to improve the governance in the city," he said.
