Mangalore, May 17: With India's prime minister- designate Narendra Modi all set to install his Cabinet shortly, lobbying for ministerial berths has intensified.

Even though most of the ministerial berths are expected to be shared among the MPs of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra and other north Indian states, a majority of 17 BJP MPs from Karnataka are also among the ministerial berth aspirants.

During the UPA rule, even though the number of Congress MPs were less in Karnataka, five Kannadigas had secured prominent ministerial berths at the Centre.

However, if sources from BJP are to be believed at least three or four MPs from Karnataka may find places in Modi's team this time.

Two former chief ministers - B S Yeddyurappa and D V Sadanada Gowda, who also represent Karnataka's two dominant communities called Lingayats and Vokkaligas respectively - may get the ministerial berth.

Senior BJP leader Ananth Kumar, who registered sixth victory in Bangalore South constituency and BJP state president Pralhad Joshi are also lobbying hard for the ministerial berths.

However, the list of ministerial aspirants doesn't end here. Uttara Kananda MP Anath Kumar Hegde, who registered fourth victory this time, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, who in his second consecutive victory, almost ended the political future of Congress veteran B Janardhan Poojary, will not leave any stone unturned to be recognized by the high command.

Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje, being the only woman BJP MP from Karnataka, is also hoping for the best. Even though she is entering Lok Sabha for the first time, she has experience of serving as power minister of Karnataka during Yeddyurappa rule.

Another first time MP and former journalist Pratap Simha, who dedicated a major part of his journalistic career to promote Moditva among Kannadigas, is also dreaming to seize the opportunity to “serve” in the cabinet of his ultimate leader. Moreover, Mr Modi personally knows Mr Simha, as the latter had written a book on the former, depicting him as the messiah of India.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
