Mangaluru, Aug 10: Urging additional police personnel to Konaje police station in the backdrop of increasing number of crimes and illegal sand mining in the police station limits, a demonstration was held by Dakshina Kannada district unit of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), in front of Konaje police station on Sunday.

Addressing the demonstrators, DYFI district vice-president B K Imthiyaz said that with crimes such as serial chain-snatching, stabbing and illegal sand mining occurring unabatedly in Konaje police station limits, the inefficiency of Konaje police has made the jurisdiction a safe place for thieves and robbers.
Since the police have failed to take action against the crimes and arrest the miscreants, the crimes have been steadily rising in the entire area. Moreover, there has been a steady rise in instances of illegal sand mining around Harekala-Pavoor area in Konaje limits from where the sand is transported to other states, he said.
He alleged that the illegal sand mining remained unchecked despite incidents of locals obstructing the sand-laden lorries in several places.
He warned that there would be intense protests in the near future if the instances of crime continued to occur unchecked by the police in Konaje limits.
Speaking on the occasion, DYFI Ullal zonal secretary Jeevan Raj Kuthar pointed that close to 40 homes in Uliya area in Pavoor village under the jurisdiction of Konaje police were under imminent danger of collapsing due to the unabated sand mining in the area.
Prior to the demonstration, a protest march was undertaken by the demonstrators from Assaigoli junction to Konaje police station.
DYFI leaders Nithin Kuthar, Ashok, Krishnappa Salian, Janardhan Kuthar, Jayanth Nayak, Rohidas and Rafeeq Harekala and others were present.
