Kasaragod, Nov 27: The destruction of five vehicles in a fire at a vehicle dumping ground along the National Highway at Chattamchal near here on Saturday has again bought to focus the vehicle dumping policy of the authorities.
The Vidyanagar police here have registered a case as signs of deliberate attempts to destroy the vehicles were found. A preliminary investigation found dried coconut palm leaves and an open match box.
Two rusted mini-trucks, an autorickshaw, an Omni van and a motrobike seized by police from different places were gutted in the fire.
The timely intervention of Fire and Rescue Services prevented the fire spreading to other vehicles in the ground.
The Kerala High Court in recent months had empowered the police to release seized heavy duty and multi-axle vehicles impounded during sand smuggling operations in the district after levy of a hefty fine from the vehicle operators.
The police also feel such a step should have been a viable means to prevent destruction of expensive vehicles dumped in various locations across the State, a police official said.
