Mangaluru, Nov 14: The Mangaluru City Corporation has identified five places in its limits to set up Indira canteens that are expected to serve people from the New Year, according to Mayor Kavitha Sanil.
Indira Canteens are a chain of government-run desi food joints, wherein people can have breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch at Rs 10. This is one of the pet projects of chief minister Siddaramaiah led Karnataka government. The first Indira Canteen was launched by Rahul Gandhi on August 15, this year in Bengaluru.
Addressing media persons on Tuesday, the Mayor said that all the five Indira Canteens would be set up in the downtowns of the city such as Kankanady market, street vending zone near Nehru Maidan, Kavoor Junction, Surathkal bus stand and near MUDA office.
Even though the government had given nod to set up six such canteens under the limits of MCC based on its population, the sixth canteen would be set up at Thokkottu junction which falls under the limits of Ullal City Municipal Council. Food and Civil Supplies Minister U T Khader had lobbied for an Indira Canteen in his constituency (Ullal).
Ms Sanil said that the construction of the Indira Canteen with master kitchen near MUDA office would be taken up by the Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL) at a cost of Rs 2.97 crore.
She said that a panel chaired by the Deputy Commissioner would oversee the functioning of the canteens. The labour department of the state government would bear 30% of maintenance cost, while the MCC has to bear the remaining 70% expenses.
