Bengaluru Feb 27: JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that the Women's Reservation Bill, reserving 33% seats for women in state assemblies and parliament, is passed in the next parliament session.

In a letter dated February 24, Gowda highlighted that the bill, despite its introduction 21 years ago in the Lok Sabha, had not been passed.
"Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee too had made efforts to get the bill passed. But so far, the collective efforts of all of us have been unsuccessful in this regard, as I found that there is no congenial atmosphere in Parliament. Some parties have gone to the extent of opposing the bill," his letter states.
The letter says that the JD(S) has been consistently seeking social, economic and political justice for women -- and it has been fighting for women's emancipation in "letter and spirit". "Our party considers women's rights as human rights," he has said.
